WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO SPEND TIME OUTDOORS

May 15, 2020

With most of our days spent indoors self-isolating due to the current health crisis, it's easy for our kids to get attached to their tech gadgets, while forgetting about the world outside. While it is crucial to stay indoors for our safety, it's also our responsibility as parents to remind our children about the importance of the great outdoors. Of course, if you can afford to step outside every now and then, they you should definitely take the opportunity.

That being said, here are some key reasons why time spent outdoors is important for you and your family's wellbeing.

It Keeps Them Active

Did you know that, according to the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, it's recommended that children aged 5-11 get at least an hour of physical activity each day? Although you can get some physical activity inside, nothing quite compares to the generous and gorgeous space that the outdoors provide. Indeed, as we've previously shared in our 'SIMPLICITY OF HAVING FUN!' post, the outdoors allows you to enjoy a wealth of simple yet incredibly fun activities, such as kite-flying, puddle jumping, and even tree-climbing. Taking your children outside is not only a fantastic way to get some exercise; it also helps them enhance their motor skills.

It Enhances Their Learning

Beyond its physical benefits, the great outdoors can also do wonders for your kids' cognitive skills. In a study published in the Frontiers in Psychology Journal, researchers found that incorporating nature in children's studies can help boost their academic performance. This is because a green environment helps them learn in a truly calm and quiet setting, which allowed them to improve their critical thinking, leadership, and perseverance. In this regard, you can start by encouraging your child to do their homework in the garden, balcony, or patio (if you have one) to really reap nature's cognitive benefits.

It Fosters Their Social Development

Nowadays, most kids are spending their time either playing video games or browsing the Internet — but this can unfortunately put a strain on their development, as they are mostly done in isolation. In contrast, a study from the University of Lethbridge explains that real-life playing can give your child a brain boost, as it supports creativity and teamwork. This is further supported by findings from Maryville University psychologists, who continue to emphasise the strong link between cognitive development and mental wellness. Of course, it only makes sense that a stimulated brain equals a healthy mind — and what better way to do all of this than outdoors? Not only will it provide your child

It Gives Them Peace of Mind

Speaking of mental health, it goes without saying that taking care of your child's mental wellbeing is of the utmost importance, given today's climate. True enough, the Canadian Institute for Health Information reveals that 10 to 20 percent of Canadian children are likely to develop a mental disorder. But don't fret, as spending quality time outside can do a world of good for your child's mental health.

As shared by researchers from the Barcelona Institute for Global Health, contact with nature during childhood reduces the risk of experiencing nervousness and depression during adulthood. On that note, feel free to take them hiking, or spend time in the backyard with the whole family. All in all, immersing your child in nature helps them cultivate a strong sense of peace that they'll carry throughout their journey in life.
